BIOGRAPHY

Michael Ciriello, MLA, AICP, is a seasoned urban and regional planner with over three decades of leadership in both public and private sectors. Before pursuing graduate studies, he served as Assistant Director of Study Abroad at North Carolina State University, where he supported international engagement and student development starting student programs in the Dominican Republic and Russia. His planning career includes service as Regional Director for Economic Development, Planning and Economic Development at the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments in North Carolina, Director of Planning and Economic Development for Butner, NC; Director of Development Services in Enfield, CT; and Director of Planning in Person County, NC. His work is distinguished by advancing comprehensive and small area plans, implementing innovative land suitability and redevelopment strategies, and securing millions in grants for infrastructure, transportation, and community development initiatives.

He holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State University and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Public Affairs from George Washington University. A member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, he has also earned certifications in stormwater inspection and pedestrian/bicycle facility design. His contributions have been recognized with multiple awards from the American Planning Association, American Society of Landscape Architects, and the National Association of Development Organizations.

Throughout his career, Michael has been an effective communicator, educator, and collaborator—organizing national conferences, engaging communities in meaningful dialogue, and presenting at regional and national forums. His professional path reflects a commitment to creative, fiscally responsible, and sustainable solutions that strengthen communities and improve both the built and natural environments.
